Canton to host Senior Olympics Basketball Shoot

Area seniors are dusting off their athletic shoes and sharpening up their skills for the Ninth Annual Western Wayne County Senior Olympics scheduled to take place at various communities Aug. 12-16. A variety of activities for men and women age 50 and older will be available throughout the competition week, which will see competitors from throughout the area.

This year the competitive events include: 5 and 10-mile bike races, fun walk, creative writing, baking contest, photography, softball throw, Frisbee toss, euchre, tennis, horse- shoes, bridge, basketball shoot, volleyball, shuffleboard, swimming, billiards, pinochle, ballroom dancing, football throw, bowling, art, soccer kick, bocce ball and many more.

Canton Township will be hosting the Basketball Shoot at 2:30 p.m. Aug.12 at the Summit on the Park, located at 46000 Summit Parkway. In addition, Canton will be hosting the Singles and Doubles Tennis competition at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Aug. 14 at Griffin Park, located at Sheldon Road and Cherry Hill Road. This year, the banquet and medals presentation, hosted by the City of Belleville and Sumpter and Van Buren township, will take place at noon Aug. 16. at Belleville High School.

Last year 99 Canton residents brought home 112 gold, silver and bronze medals during the Eighth Annual Western Wayne County Senior Olympics.
