Halloween prank or federal misdemeanor

Pranks abound on Halloween, and many can be harmless fun but one that occurred in Plymouth last week involving a scarecrow could turn out to be a federal misdemeanor.

An amusing event each year in downtown Plymouth is the annual Scarecrows in Kellogg Park, a whimsical creative display of full size unique straw characters depicted in every imaginable walk of life.

Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, local non-profits and gifted community residents never fail to amuse everyone each Halloween with their creativity.

This year 100 entrants were awarded the opportunity to show-off their crafty skill and given a bale of straw and a pole to attach their creation.

Michigan Army National Guard recruiter Sgt. Gabrielle Lynn was in charge of erecting one for her guard unit. She did an admirable job outfitting her soldier entrant with an authentic guard uniform, helmet, combat boots, ammunition belt, bullet-proof vest and white ghoulish mask.

A real attention-getter, the Sergeant’s very striking entry didn’t last long; last weekend someone stole it and she wants it back.

“To be a soldier to wear this uniform is a big deal,” she said. “I was so excited to bring my boys down here to come see it. They’re so proud their mommy is a soldier.

Sgt. Lynn says young people deserve a second chance and she would love a chance to talk the person who’s responsible.

It’s possible this prank could be more than a trick and stealing candy from a neighbor’s porch.

All that is left is the pole and that belongs to the city.
