Canton Township Board of Trustees unanimously approved a new deputy supervisor position at their July 27 meeting that will offer a surprisingly large compensation package.

Township Supervisor Ann Marie Graham-Hudak said the newly created deputy supervisor position will initially pay the yet-unmanned appointee at least $178,000 and as much as $224,000 and provide an additional layer of oversight and increase efficiency and accountability. She said the appointee’s name will not be released until a contract can be consummated.

Graham-Hudak said “Canton is one the only municipalities of its size that did not have a position comparable to the deputy supervisor position.”

Neighboring Plymouth Township Supervisor Kurt Heise, whose annual compensation is approximately $115,000, and $40,000 less than Graham-Hudak’s $155,000 to $160,000, says they don’t have a deputy supervisor position in the township and his compensation “Doesn’t include a free car, gas mileage, healthcare and cell phone.” Heise was questioned by critics when he recently hired a part-time economic developer.
