Three-year-old Lucy Bukis of Westland remains hospitalized at Motts Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan after a wayward firework struck her in the head and shattered her skull on Saturday.
Reports say neighbor’s fireworks malfunctioned and started shooting sideways in their neighborhood. Lucy was 70-yards away when she was struck in the back of her head. The impact caused many fractures and a brain bleed.
Lucy had surgery Sunday morning to implant two metal plates and attaching screws. Doctors say the surgery went well, remarking afterwards that it looked like she had been hit in the head with a hammer.
Friends of the family have set up a Go-Fund-Me Account to help with medical and travel expenses.

Lucy is expected to be released from the hospital soon. Her father, Ron Bukis, has been out of work since February, after hurting his knee. His family of seven is about to become eight, and they’ve been grateful for any amount of support given to them.
Lucy is the niece of Plymouth Township Fire Department Lt. Pete Bukis.
