Detroit WDIV reporter Kyla Russell recently interviewed Northville resident Cindi Brazen regarding outdoor dining and city street closures after pandemic driven street changes, something the city has fought to make permanent. Brazen is a Lets Open Northville member.

It all started to heat up when city leaders continually encouraged restaurants to extend outdoor dining after the lock-downs. They said the idea was to make the downtown area more pedestrian friendly and walk-able.

Residents are fed-up with the increased traffic on side streets. Pedestrians, motorists, business owners, shoppers and diners alike have all weighed in with their opinions. But those suffering the most are the residents who live on those side streets.

The battle reached a boiling point when the non-profit, LON, filed a lawsuit on Oct. 24, 2023 in Wayne County Circuit Court asserting the City Commission has overstepped its authority.

After a bench trial last year Circuit Court Judge Charlene Elder ruled that the street closures in Northville are illegal and violate property rights.

Perhaps a public referendum on the matter is in order.
