The Canton Township man killed Saturday morning after he was allegedly shot by a neighbor has been identified, not by Police but by the Michigan GOP in a released statement identifying him as Nathan Morris.
“Nate was a great Dad and good man,” the Michigan GOP post said. “To think his life was taken because his daughter was playing with mulch in someone’s yard is unfathomable. Even in his final act as a dad he was protecting his children by sending them home while he tried to defuse the situation.”
Morris was an engineer at Ford Motor Company and was recent candidate for the Plymouth Canton Community Schools Board of Education.
According to the Detroit News Morris leaves behind his wife, Becky, and two young children, Molly and Zoey. A fundraiser has been started to support the family.

The Canton Police Department is investigating a tragic shooting that occurred in a residential neighborhood this morning resulting in the death of a 35-year-old male.
At approximately 11:48 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Cornell Street, for reports of shots fired.
Upon arrival, officers found the victim in the street suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers immediately moved the man to safety where he was given EMS medical assistance from Canton Firefighter/Paramedics.
Officers say that the yet-unnamed victim and suspect engaged in a brief confrontation before the incident occurred. Both are residents of the neighborhood.
Police said the suspect barricaded himself inside his nearby home. After officers issued multiple commands the suspect ultimately surrendered into police custody.
Authorities report the victim succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The suspect remains locked-up pending a full investigation. The case is set to be turned over to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for review of charges.
“This was a senseless act of violence toward the victim,” said Canton Police Chief Chad Baugh. “The Canton Police Department sends our deepest condolences to the victim’s family, and to the neighbors who may have witnessed this tragic event.”
