Kettle Surprise!
A Salvation Army bell ringer in Canton received the surprise of the season.
A South African Krugerrand gold coin weighing just 1-oz. was wrapped inside a $5 bill when it was discovered last night in one of The Salvation Army’s iconic Red Kettles at the Hobby Lobby store on Ford Road in Canton.
The coin is worth an estimated $4,300.00.
The more than generous gift will go toward The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit’s $7.1 million Red Kettle Christmas Campaign goal, said Major Kris Wood of the Salvation Army Plymouth Corps Community Center.
This is the second year in a row that the Plymouth Corps has received a gold Krugerrand from a “Secret Santa.” For more than a decade, a separate east-side donor also dropped a South African gold Krugerrand into a red kettle in St. Clair Shores—last year was that donor’s final gift.
This incredible act of generosity comes at a critical time as demand for assistance remains high and extends far beyond the holiday season. “That’s why finishing the Red Kettle Christmas Campaign strong is so important—and why every gift matters right now,” Wood said.
Now through Dec. 31, all donations are doubled, (even gold Krugerrands), up to $500,000, thanks to the Consortium of Hope—a group of community-minded leaders and businesses matching year-end giving dollar-for-dollar.
The community can make a donation buy donating in-person at red kettle locations across metro Detroit, donating online at SAmetrodetroit.org., or Texting GIFT to 24365.
