Wayne resident, Joseph Michael Slocum, Jr. 23, was charged and remanded to jail this afternoon before 35th District Court Judge James Plakas in the connection with the fatal shooting of his ex-girlfriend at the Canton Suites Hotel on Feb. 16.
Slocum was charged with First Degree Murder and possession of a firearm, a felony, by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
It is alleged that Slocum entered the hotel and produced and fired a handgun, fatally wounding Veronica Crain, 19, of Detroit, then fled on foot.
According to a release from the Prosecutor’s Office, Canton police officers were dispatched to the hotel in the 5700 block of North Haggerty Road at 9:22 p.m. for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim behind the front desk, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Medics arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.
Minutes later Canton officers were dispatched to Southbound I-275 and Ford Road for a reported car accident. Upon their arrival, officers observed Slocum lying in the road suffering from multiple injuries. Medics arrived on the scene and transported the him to a local hospital for treatment.
“I say this often: The most dangerous time for a domestic violence victim is when they are trying to leave the relationship. Horrifyingly, this case is a textbook example. We will vigorously seek justice for Veronica and her family. And please, if you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, there are many people and agencies who stand by to help you,” said prosecutor Worthy.
Slocum is scheduled for to appear in court next on May 3 for a Probable Cause Conference.
