Plymouth Township police are warning residents there has been a sharp increase in wheel and tire thefts in the area in recent weeks that coincides with similar crime reports from Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Livingston counties.

In a special bulletin issued today police authorities describe a heavy rash of larceny of wheels and tires from vehicles parked at homes, apartments, condo complexes and local businesses including thefts from both new and used vehicles parked in dealership lots.

Police say Ford Motor products such as newer model Ford Explorer, Ford Edge, Ford Flex and Ford Fusion are leading targets along with higher end Lincoln and GM vehicles, both cars and trucks, equipped with 18 and 20 inch diameter wheels.

Township police advise the installation of wheel locks and strongly suggest vehicle owners conceal the wheel-lock keys and not place them in the center console or glove box.
