Mettetal hosts open house

The Canton-Plymouth Mettetal Airport will host an open house from 10 a.m. until 3p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28. Located at 8550 N. Lilley Road at Joy Road, the general aviation field is now operated by the Michigan Department of Transportation.

The event is free and will feature live music, aviation display and vintage aircraft along with a classic car show and model airplane demonstrations.

Discovery plane rides and helicopter rides will be available for a fee and there will be food and beverages for sale.

Mettetal Airport was started by Ralph Mettetal in 1939 as a grass strip. Today, the facility averages 85 take-offs and landings per day and has strict noise abatement procedures.
