In a recent Northville Township forum, Sen. Patrick Colbeck, R-Canton, suggested other options to funding road repairs that would not incur an extra tax burden like the one that would be created by the approval of the May 5 ballot Proposal 15-1.

Citing an alternative, Colbeck said the Bolger Plan passed by the state House last session would ensure 100 percent of the taxes raised at the gas pump would be dedicated to the roads and there was an opportunity to put $947 million to work in year-one as opposed to the $432 million from the ballot proposal being pushed by Gov. Rick Snyder.

“I think we can do better,” said Colbeck who encouraged attendees to explore other road funding alternatives before filling out the ballot on May 5.

The two part House Bill package which lacked Senate approval, a $1.2 billion plan to increase road funding fostered by House Speaker Jase Bolger, has two pieces.

House Bill 4539 removes the 6% sales tax on fuel over a six-year phase-in passed 56-53.
